Plug-In Solar Batteries Are Excluded From the UK's New Rules
A plug-in solar battery is being sold across the UK right now, often marketed as "plug-and-play". But the government's new rules explicitly exclude battery storage — and require every compliant kit to warn you not to connect one.

What the rules actually say
In July 2026 the government published two documents setting out how plug-in solar will work in Britain: the Interim Product Specification (what a compliant device must be) and its consultation response (confirming the regulations are being laid before Parliament). We break both down in our guide to the new specification.
On batteries, the wording is unusually blunt. The specification does two things:
The two exclusions, in plain English
1. Out of scope. The rules do not apply to plug-in battery systems, or to plug-in solar devices with batteries built in.
2. Warning required. Every compliant kit's instructions must carry a prominent warning that the device is not intended to be connected to, operated with, or used alongside a battery energy storage system.
This isn't a gap someone forgot to fill. It's deliberate, it's written into the product rules, and manufacturers have to tell you about it in the box.
Why they were excluded
The consultation drew 466 responses, and batteries were one of the most frequently raised objections. Many respondents argued that excluding storage guts the financial case, because without a battery you export your midday surplus for nothing.
The government's reason is worth reading properly rather than assuming bad faith:
Battery-integrated products raise additional technical and regulatory issues that have not been assessed through this work. The safety study behind the whole framework examined panels and microinverters. It did not model a battery discharging into a domestic ring circuit through a 13A plug — a genuinely different electrical proposition with different fault behaviour and fire risk.
The important nuance: the response also confirms the government will keep developing evidence on battery-integrated products. So this is "not yet, evidence pending" — not a permanent refusal. A future extension is plausible. No date has been given.
Meanwhile, they're on sale anyway
Here's the awkward part for buyers. While the government finalised rules excluding storage, manufacturers carried on launching plug-in batteries — some marketed in language that directly contradicts the new position.
AEG AS-BBL09 and AS-BBL08. AC-coupled modular battery systems — 4.8kWh per module on the BBL09, 3.0 or 6.0kWh on the BBL08 "micro" system, both with 10-year warranties and clusterable capacity. The manufacturer markets both as offering "effortless plug-and-play installation." Products of exactly this type sit in the category the UK specification excludes, however the installation is described in marketing.
Ecosystem batteries from the big plug-in brands. EcoFlow's STREAM battery units (roughly £799–£1,099 depending on model) and equivalent products from Anker and Zendure are already sold in the UK as add-ons to plug-in solar systems.
To be clear: none of these products are illegal to buy, sell or own. What they are not is covered by the plug-and-play framework. Buying one doesn't give you the right to plug it into a socket the way you soon will with panels.
If you've already ordered one
Don't panic. Do check three things.

1. How does it actually connect?
If the marketing says "no installer needed," ask the seller in writing how that squares with a specification that excludes battery systems. A battery feeding your home circuits needs hardwiring by a qualified electrician. Budget £150–£300 if that isn't included. -
2. Is your deposit refundable?
Several launches are reservation-based with long lead times. Check the refund terms and what happens if the ship date slips. Pay deposits by credit card so Section 75 protection covers the wider contract. -
3. Are you expecting 0% VAT?
The zero rate applies to supply-and-install arrangements, not to a battery you buy online and connect yourself. If a retailer's pricing implies otherwise, question it before committing.
Is a battery still worth buying?
Sometimes yes. The economics are real — they're just slower than the panels, and they come with an electrician attached.

- Tariff arbitrage year-round: charge at 7–9p, use at 26.1p
- Backup power in an outage, on some models
⚠️ What it costs
- £800–£1,500 upfront, before installation
- An electrician on top, indefinitely, under current rules
- Round-trip efficiency losses of 10–15%
- Payback 4–6 years vs ~2 years for panels alone
Our advice: buy the solar first. Watch your real generation and usage in the app for a couple of months. Then decide on storage. The panels pay back roughly twice as fast, they're the part becoming genuinely plug-and-play, and you'll size the battery far better from real data than from a spreadsheet. Two routes that work today
1. Hardwired battery, fitted by an electrician.
How home batteries have always been installed, and entirely legal. Full benefit, properly certified, and 0% VAT applies if it's a supply-and-install package. It just isn't the cheap plug-in convenience some marketing implies.
2. A portable power station instead.
The quiet workaround, and it suits renters well. A unit like an EcoFlow DELTA 2 charges from your panels or from cheap overnight electricity, then powers appliances directly from its own sockets. It never feeds your home's circuits — so none of these rules apply to it. No electrician, no G98, no compliance question, and it moves house with you.
Frequently asked questions
Are plug-in solar batteries illegal in the UK?
No. They're legal to buy, sell and own. They're just not covered by the new framework — so connecting one to your home's circuits still needs a qualified electrician rather than a plug.
Why do manufacturers call them "plug-and-play" then?
Because many of these products were designed for European markets where the rules differ, and the phrase describes the physical simplicity of the hardware rather than UK regulatory status. It's not necessarily misleading by intent — but it doesn't reflect what UK rules currently permit.
Will batteries be added to the rules later?
Possibly. The government has said it will continue developing evidence on battery-integrated products, which suggests the door isn't shut. But no timeline exists and the safety work hasn't been done. Treat claims of imminent inclusion sceptically unless they cite a government source.
Does a portable power station count as a plug-in battery?
No — which is exactly why it's a useful workaround. It powers appliances from its own sockets rather than exporting into your wiring, so it never becomes part of your electrical installation.
Can I still get 0% VAT on a battery?
On a supply-and-install package from a qualifying installer, yes, until March 2027. On a battery you order online and connect yourself, no — the relief attaches to the installation, not the product.
