UK Heat Pump Guide 2026
Heat Pumps UK 2026
£7,500 government grant available now. Everything UK homeowners need to know about heat pump costs, savings, grants and whether it’s right for your home.
🏛️ Boiler Upgrade Scheme: £7,500 grant for air source heat pumps — £9,000 for oil/LPG homes from July 2026. Runs until April 2028.
What Is a Heat Pump?
A heat pump is a low-carbon heating system that extracts heat from the outside air or ground and transfers it into your home. Unlike a gas boiler which burns fuel to create heat, a heat pump moves existing heat — making it 300–400% efficient. For every 1kWh of electricity it uses, it delivers 3–4kWh of heat.
Most modern heat pumps also work in reverse — cooling your home in summer as well as heating it in winter. They’re the Swiss Army knife of home climate control, and with the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant available, 2026 is one of the best times to install one.
The key difference from a gas boiler
A gas boiler burns gas to generate heat — it’s around 90% efficient at best. A heat pump moves heat from outside to inside — it’s 300–400% efficient. The catch: electricity costs more per unit than gas. Whether a heat pump saves you money depends on your current fuel, your tariff, and your system’s efficiency rating (SCOP).
Are Heat Pumps Worth It in the UK?
The honest answer depends heavily on what you’re replacing and where you live.
✅ Strong case — replacing oil or LPG
Oil and LPG are expensive fuels. A heat pump with a SCOP of 3.0 is already significantly cheaper to run, even before the £9,000 grant (from July 2026). The financial case is compelling — payback often under 10 years even without further energy price rises.
⚡ Decent case — replacing gas, switching tariff
At current prices, a well-specified heat pump on a standard tariff costs broadly the same to run as a gas boiler. Switch to a dedicated heat pump tariff like Octopus Cosy and it becomes cheaper. The £7,500 grant reduces upfront cost significantly — after grant, a 3-bed semi can cost similar to a replacement boiler.
⚠️ Weaker case — poorly insulated home
Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes. Poor insulation forces the system to work harder, reducing efficiency and increasing running costs. Sort insulation first — cavity wall and loft insulation are cheap by comparison and dramatically improve heat pump performance.
⚠️ Critical: System design matters enormously. A poorly designed heat pump installation will underperform and cost more to run. Always use an NIBE or MCS-certified installer who carries out a full heat loss calculation before quoting.

Heat Pump Grants UK 2026
Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)
England and Wales · Runs until April 2028
The main government grant for heat pumps. The £7,500 is deducted directly from your installer’s invoice — you never receive the money yourself and never need to pay the full amount upfront. No application needed on your part — your MCS-certified installer handles everything.
Eligibility requirements:
- ✅Property in England or Wales
- ✅Replacing an existing fossil fuel heating system
- ✅MCS-certified installer
- ✅No EPC requirement from 2026 onwards
Home Energy Scotland Grant
Scotland only
Scottish homeowners can access the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan scheme — often more generous than the BUS. Includes an optional interest-free loan on top of the grant. Contact Home Energy Scotland on 0808 808 2282 for a personalised assessment.
0% VAT on Installation
Everyone qualifies · Until March 2027
VAT on heat pump installations is 0% until March 2027. No application needed — applied automatically by your installer. Stacks on top of the BUS grant.
Types of Heat Pump
Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP)
Extracts heat from outside air · Works down to -20°C
The most common type in the UK. An outdoor unit extracts heat from the air — even in cold weather — and transfers it inside via a refrigerant circuit. Needs a small amount of outdoor space for the unit. Relatively straightforward to install and eligible for the full £7,500 BUS grant. Also works as an air conditioner in summer on most models.
✅ Pros
- BUS grant eligible
- No groundworks needed
- Works in cold weather
- Can cool in summer
❌ Cons
- Less efficient than GSHP
- Outdoor unit visible
- Some noise from unit
Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP)
Extracts heat from the ground · Higher efficiency
Uses pipes buried in the ground (horizontal trenches or vertical boreholes) to extract heat. More efficient than air source — typically SCOP 4.0+ — because ground temperature is more stable than air. Higher installation cost due to groundworks. Best for larger properties with outdoor space or those replacing oil/LPG. Costs £18,000–£35,000 before grant.
BUS grant eligible
Needs outdoor space
Higher upfront cost
Mini-Split / Air-to-Air Heat Pump
Heating and cooling · No hot water · Not BUS eligible
Wall-mounted units that heat and cool individual rooms — the same technology as a split system air conditioner. Not eligible for the BUS grant as they don’t provide central heating or hot water. Best as a supplement to existing heating or for homes without central heating systems. See our Air Conditioning guide for more detail.
Heat Pump Running Costs
Based on Ofgem Q1 2026 rates. A 3-bed semi with 15,000 kWh annual heat demand.
💡 The key to saving money — switch tariff
On a standard tariff, a heat pump costs broadly the same as a gas boiler. Switch to a dedicated heat pump tariff like Octopus Cosy (cheap electricity during off-peak hours) and running costs drop significantly. This single step can save £200–£350 per year on top of your gas savings.
