Rule 1 — To Cool Your Home Without AC, Stop the Heat Getting In
This is the counterintuitive one, and it’s the single biggest mistake made in UK homes every heatwave: on hot days the air outside is often hotter than the air inside your home, so opening your windows actually lets hot air in. Keep them closed during the heat of the day and open them in the cooler hours of the early morning or evening — advice backed by the Natural History Museum, the Met Office and every building scientist who’s looked at the problem.
Walk through any town in southern Spain at 3pm and you’ll see it: every shutter closed, every window shut, streets deserted. It looks like the town is asleep. It’s actually a heat-management system that’s been refined for centuries. The house becomes a sealed cool-box holding onto the night’s low temperature for as long as possible.
The daytime lockdown routine:
- 1Close windows by 8–9am — the moment outside temperature passes inside temperature, every open window is heating your house
- 2Blinds and curtains shut on the sunny side — follow the sun round: east-facing in the morning, south midday, west in the afternoon and evening
- 3Block heat outside the glass where possible — external anti-heat shutters and blinds can reduce indoor temperature by up to 5°C, because they stop solar energy before it passes through the window. Internal curtains help, but by then the heat is already inside
- 4Reflective window film on problem windows — a one-off £15–£30 fix for south or west-facing glass that turns a room into an oven every afternoon. Rejects a large share of solar gain permanently
Rule 2 — Night Purge Ventilation: the Free Air Conditioning
If daytime is about sealing the house, night is when you cash in. Building scientists call it night-flush ventilation: opening your windows on cooler evenings to promote a cross-breeze, letting cool air circulate all night so you start the next day with a cool home — then closing windows and blinds before things heat up in the morning.
Two techniques make the purge dramatically more effective:
↔️ Cross-ventilation
Open windows on opposite sides of your home to create a through-draft which draws warm air out and lets cooler air flow in. Wind pressure on one side and suction on the other does the work — far more air movement than any single open window.
↕️ The stack effect
Hot air rises, so open windows at different heights — a downstairs window and an upstairs or roof window at the same time. This pulls cooler air in from below while pushing warm air out through the top of the house. In a two-storey UK house this vertical chimney effect is your most powerful free tool.

The night purge: cool air pulled in low, hot air pushed out high. Run it from late evening until you close up at 8–9am.
Rule 3 — Use Fans Properly (Most People Don’t)
A fan pointed at yourself doesn’t cool the room at all — it creates a wind chill effect that makes you feel 2–4°C cooler by evaporating sweat from your skin. That’s genuinely useful, but it’s only one of three ways to use a fan, and it’s the least powerful.
- 🌀The exhaust fan trick (evenings only): point a fan out of a window facing outdoors, with a window open on the opposite side of the house. It sounds backwards, but it creates negative pressure that pumps hot indoor air out and pulls cool evening air in — a technique firefighters use to clear smoke. Westinghouse actually studied this decades ago and found blowing hot air out produced more cooling than blowing air in. Critical caveat: it only works when it’s cooler outside than in — do it in the evening or early morning, never mid-afternoon.

- 🧊The bowl-of-ice trick — honestly assessed: a bowl of ice in front of a fan does produce a cooler breeze for the 20–30 minutes the ice lasts, in the immediate path of the fan. It won’t cool a room and the effect is small — fine for a desk emergency, not a strategy.
Evaporative Coolers — Worth It on the Right Day
Evaporative coolers sit between a fan and an AC unit: 3–6p per hour to run, and on a hot dry day they can drop the air they blow by 4–9°C. On the UK’s humid days they do very little — the physics depends entirely on humidity, which is why they’re everywhere in Mexico and rare in Bangkok. Stop Making Heat Indoors
Everything electrical in your home is a small heater. On a normal day you don’t notice; on a 32°C day it’s the difference between bearable and miserable.
- →Don’t use the oven. Ovens and hobs emit a lot of heat for a long time after you’ve finished using them and turned them off. Cold meals, the microwave, an air fryer, or the barbecue outside — anything but a 200°C box running for an hour in your kitchen.
- →Run the dishwasher, washing machine and tumble dryer at night — or skip the dryer entirely; washing dries on an airer in under two hours in heatwave conditions.
- →Swap remaining incandescent or halogen bulbs for LEDs — old bulbs turn most of their energy into heat, not light. LEDs run cool and cut your bill at the same time.
- →Switch off standby devices — TVs, consoles and chargers all emit heat while idle. Small individually; meaningful in a sealed room over a full day.
Cool Yourself, Not the Room
A trick from the hot-country playbook: it’s often cheaper and faster to lower your body temperature than the air temperature.
Fabrics matter more than people think. Linen is one of the most breathable fabrics with excellent ventilation; bamboo is naturally breathable and very comfortable in hot weather. Use cotton or linen sheets to keep cooler at night — and get the polyester off the bed entirely.
Water is your friend: a cool shower before bed regulates body temperature, and a wet flannel on the neck and wrists gives an immediate cooling effect because that’s where blood runs closest to the skin. A hot water bottle filled with cold tap water and slipped under the pillow or at your feet works surprisingly well — the Victorian solution, still undefeated for the price.
What 40°C Countries Taught Me
Spain: the whole system is timing. Shutters down and house sealed by mid-morning, life shifts to early morning and evening, and the big meal happens in the coolest room of the house. The famous persianas — external roller shutters — are the single most effective piece of heat-control kit I’ve ever used, and it’s baffling they’re not standard in the UK yet.
Mexico: homes are built around shaded courtyards that act as cool-air reservoirs — and in the dry interior, evaporative coolers genuinely shine in a way they rarely can in the UK. The transferable lesson: shade your outdoor space and the air entering your house at night is cooler too. Deciduous trees are particularly good because they give dense shade in summer while letting sunlight warm the house in winter.
Brazil: older buildings are designed so air can pass straight through — doors and windows aligned front to back, ventilation grilles above internal doors. You can copy this for free: open internal doors along the path between your two purge windows so airflow isn’t blocked halfway through the house.
Thailand: the humidity means evaporative tricks fail — so it’s fans, everywhere, all the time, plus the acceptance that moving air is comfort even when the air itself is warm. On the UK’s muggy days, this is the mode to copy: prioritise airflow over everything else.

Long-Term Fixes That Pay for Themselves
Insulation works both ways. This surprises people: in summer, a poorly insulated house allows heat to build up inside, so insulating your loft and walls keeps rooms cool when outside temperatures soar — the same loft roll that cuts your winter gas bill slows the sun cooking your bedrooms through the roof in July.
