Ground-mounted on a slab is the alternative where wall mounting isn't practical or where you'd rather it wasn't visible from a main window. Either way, it needs to be within a realistic refrigerant pipe run of the indoor unit — usually under 15 metres before costs and efficiency losses start adding up — which limits how far you can genuinely hide it.

The indoor unit produces condensation that drains away via a small pipe. Algae or debris can block this over time, causing water to drip inside or the unit to shut off as a safety measure. A genuinely common, low-cost fix if caught early — an annoying and sometimes messier one if ignored for years.
Slow refrigerant leaks
A system that used to cool well and now takes noticeably longer, or never quite reaches the set temperature, is a classic symptom of a slow refrigerant leak — not something to top up yourself even if you could; only an F-Gas certified engineer can legally handle refrigerant. Left unaddressed, it gets worse and eventually causes compressor damage, which is expensive.

Systems above a certain refrigerant charge size are legally required to have periodic leak checks under F-Gas regulations, not just a recommendation. Ask your installer whether your specific system falls under this requirement, and get it in writing as part of your maintenance plan.

Worth Checking: The £2,500 Air-to-Air Grant
There is a genuine £2,500 government grant covering some air conditioning installations, but the eligibility bar is narrow — it only applies if you're completely replacing an existing whole-home electric heating system (like old storage heaters) with an air-to-air heat pump that also cools. If you already have gas, oil or LPG central heating and just want summer cooling, you won't qualify — however a system is marketed. Worth a two-minute check with an installer if you're currently on electric storage heating; not worth factoring in otherwise.
