What Is a Heat Pump?

A heat pump is a low-carbon heating system that extracts heat from the outside air or ground and transfers it into your home. The vast majority of UK installs are air source heat pumps — extracting heat from the outside air rather than the ground — because they're cheaper to fit and need no groundworks. Unlike a gas boiler which burns fuel to create heat, a heat pump moves existing heat — making it 300–400% efficient. For every 1kWh of electricity it uses, it delivers 3–4kWh of heat.

Most modern heat pumps also work in reverse — cooling your home in summer as well as heating it in winter. ✅ Strong case — replacing oil or LPG

Heat pumps work best in well-insulated homes. Poor insulation forces the system to work harder, reducing efficiency and increasing running costs. Sort insulation first — cavity wall and loft insulation are cheap by comparison and dramatically improve heat pump performance. Higher installation cost due to groundworks. Best for larger properties with outdoor space or those replacing oil/LPG. Costs £18,000–£35,000 before grant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do heat pumps work in cold UK winters?

Yes — modern air source heat pumps work efficiently down to -20°C. UK winters rarely drop below -10°C even in Scotland. Efficiency does reduce in very cold weather but the system continues to heat your home effectively. Proper sizing by your installer accounts for your local climate.

Do I need to upgrade my radiators?

Not always. Heat pumps work at lower flow temperatures than gas boilers (45–55°C vs 70–80°C), which means radiators need to be larger to deliver the same heat output.
