They’ve been hugely popular in Germany for years — over 1.2 million installations and counting — and the UK is now catching up fast following the government’s 2026 legalisation announcement.

⚠️ Honest caveat: Balcony solar won’t replace your electricity bill. A typical 800W system saves £180–£210 per year — useful, but much less than a full rooftop installation. If you own your home and have a suitable roof, rooftop solar will deliver far better returns.
Legal Status in the UK — 2026 Update
The UK lagged behind Europe on this for years. That’s now changing quickly.
April 2026 — BS 7671 Amendment 4 in force
Now
The new UK wiring regulations for sub-800W plug-in systems are now in force. Grid-connected systems up to 800W are legal — but currently require installation by a qualified electrician. Expect a one-off cost of £150–£300 for this.
July 2026 — Full self-install expected

The BSI product certification standard is expected in July 2026. Once published, UK-certified kits can be self-installed into a standard 3-pin socket — no electrician needed. Lidl and John Lewis are expected to stock approved kits.
Right now — Portable power stations are fully legal
No install needed

What about the G98 form?
Grid-connected systems still require notification to your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) via a G98 or G99 form. Your installer will handle this. It’s a straightforward process but it does mean you can’t legally just plug in and go — until the July 2026 self-install rules are finalised.
Do I need landlord permission?
The Renters’ Rights Act 2025 introduced a right for tenants to request energy improvements. Landlords cannot unreasonably refuse a reasonable request — and a plug-in solar system that requires no structural modification has a low bar for “reasonable”. That said, it’s always worth asking your landlord first and getting permission in writing.
How Much Can Balcony Solar Panels Save You?
Savings are modest compared to rooftop solar — but the payback period is much shorter.
Based on average UK electricity price of 26p/kWh. Savings assume panels are south-facing with minimal shading. East or west-facing installations will generate roughly 20–30% less.
Add battery storage — boost savings significantly
Without battery storage, electricity you generate but don’t use at that moment is exported to the grid — and you won’t currently get paid for it as a plug-in system. Adding a small battery (£350–£680) increases self-consumption from around 50–60% to 70–90%, meaningfully improving your savings.
